Residential Trauma Treatment Center in Redlands, CA

Experiencing a traumatic event—such as abuse, combat, or a natural disaster—can lead to conditions like PTSD and trauma-related disorders. These experiences can leave lasting emotional scars that disrupt your daily life, causing persistent feelings of fear, anger, guilt, or detachment. Over time, these intense emotions may lead to depression or anxiety, making it difficult to feel connected and grounded in the present.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by these emotions or struggling to manage the symptoms of PTSD, it’s essential to seek the right support. While the effects of trauma can vary, professional care offers a pathway to healing without the need for inpatient hospitalization. At Benchmark Transitions, we provide comprehensive trauma treatment programs designed to help you regain control of your life and start your journey toward lasting well-being in a supportive, residential setting.

What Is Trauma-Informed Care?

Trauma-informed care is an approach that acknowledges the profound effects trauma can have on a person’s physical, emotional, and mental health. At Benchmark Transitions, we emphasize safety, trust, and empowerment throughout the healing process, ensuring clients feel understood, respected, and supported. Unlike traditional psychiatric hospitals, where individuals may experience re-traumatization due to clinical settings that can feel impersonal or restrictive, our program offers a compassionate alternative for individuals in the Riverside and San Bernardino regions.

In many psychiatric hospitals, the fast-paced environment and lack of individualized care can sometimes contribute to feelings of helplessness, isolation, or even re-traumatization. At Benchmark Transitions, we take a more personalized, trauma-informed approach that ensures clients feel safe and involved in their recovery journey.

Key principles of our trauma-informed care include:

  • Safety: We create a nurturing, calm environment where clients feel physically and emotionally secure.
  • Trustworthiness: We build trust through clear communication, transparency, and consistency in treatment.
  • Empowerment: Our clients are encouraged to take an active role in their recovery, empowering them to regain control of their lives.
  • Collaboration: We foster a strong partnership between clients and our clinical team, working together to achieve healing.
  • Cultural sensitivity: We respect and honor each client’s diverse backgrounds and experiences, adapting our care to meet individual needs.

If you or a loved one is struggling and looking for a trauma-informed alternative to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, contact Benchmark Transitions today. Our team is committed to offering trauma survivors a safe and supportive treatment experience. Contact us at  (800) 474-4848.

How Childhood Trauma Impacts Us as Adults

Childhood trauma can have profound and lasting effects that extend well into adulthood. The experiences of abuse, neglect, or witnessing violence during childhood often shape how individuals view themselves, others, and the world around them.

Unresolved childhood trauma can manifest in a variety of ways, including:

1. Trust Issues

Adults who have experienced trauma in childhood may develop deep-seated trust issues, finding it difficult to rely on others or form secure attachments.

This lack of trust can affect personal and professional relationships, often leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness. The fear of being hurt, abandoned, or betrayed can prevent individuals from opening up to others, making it hard to maintain close, meaningful connections.

2. Low Self-Esteem

Children who endure trauma often internalize feelings of shame, guilt, or inadequacy, which can carry over into adulthood. These individuals may struggle with negative self-perception, feeling unworthy or undeserving of love, success, or happiness.

This lack of self-confidence can limit their ability to pursue personal and professional goals, affect decision-making, and contribute to a cycle of self-sabotaging behaviors.

3. Emotional Dysregulation

Childhood trauma can impair an individual’s ability to manage their emotions, leading to heightened sensitivity, intense reactions to stress, and difficulty calming down after being upset.

Adults with emotional dysregulation may experience frequent mood swings, outbursts of anger, or prolonged periods of sadness or anxiety. This can affect their ability to cope with everyday challenges, create tension in relationships, and interfere with their overall well-being.

4. Physical Health Problems

The impact of trauma is not limited to emotional and psychological health; it can also take a toll on the body.

Research shows that individuals who experience trauma in childhood are at a higher risk of developing chronic physical health issues, such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and autoimmune disorders.

Childhood Trauma and Substance Use

Many individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) have a history of unresolved childhood trauma. Experiences such as abuse, neglect, or exposure to violence can leave emotional scars that last into adulthood.

Trauma often leads to overwhelming feelings of shame, guilt, and emotional pain, which individuals may attempt to numb through alcohol or drugs. Substance use can initially seem like a way to cope, offering temporary relief from the psychological effects of trauma, but over time, it can lead to dependency and further emotional damage.

At Benchmark Transitions, we understand the deep connection between childhood trauma and substance use. In our treatment programs, we address both issues simultaneously, using trauma-informed care to help clients process their past experiences while providing the tools to manage addiction. By addressing root causes, we empower clients to break free from the cycle of substance use and build healthier coping mechanisms on their journey to long-term recovery.

Trauma and Mental Illness

Trauma plays a significant role in the development of many mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder.

When an individual experiences trauma, the emotional impact can be profound, leading to ongoing struggles with mood regulation, persistent feelings of fear or hopelessness, and intrusive thoughts. For some, trauma may cause them to feel disconnected from their emotions or experience chronic hypervigilance, where they are always on edge, waiting for the next perceived threat.

At Benchmark Transitions, we provide integrated care that addresses both trauma and co-occurring mental health disorders. Our approach helps clients process their traumatic experiences while simultaneously working on mental health challenges that may have developed as a result of the trauma.

Treating Trauma and Addiction Together

At Benchmark Transitions, we understand the critical connection between trauma and addiction. For many individuals, unresolved trauma is a significant driver of substance use.

Traumatic experiences can leave lasting emotional pain, and in many cases, individuals turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to escape or numb these overwhelming feelings. Unfortunately, this coping mechanism often leads to addiction, creating a cycle where the underlying trauma remains untreated, and substance use escalates.

In our residential trauma treatment program, we take an integrated approach to address both trauma and addiction simultaneously. By focusing on both issues together, we help clients confront the root causes of their substance use while providing the emotional support they need to begin their trauma recovery.

Our Approach to Trauma Treatment

Trauma healing and recovery require a comprehensive and individualized approach. At Benchmark Transitions, we use a variety of evidence-based therapies and holistic treatments to address the emotional, psychological, and physical effects of trauma. Our program includes:

1. Trauma-Informed Care

At Benchmark Transitions, trauma-informed care is a cornerstone of our approach to healing. Our staff is fully trained to recognize the impact of trauma on a person’s life and prioritize safety, trust, and empowerment throughout the treatment process. We create a supportive and compassionate environment where clients feel understood and respected, ensuring they are never re-traumatized during their healing journey. Trauma-informed care helps clients regain control of their recovery, providing a solid foundation for emotional and psychological healing.

2. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

One of the primary therapies we offer at Benchmark Transitions is EMDR, a proven method for processing and resolving traumatic memories. EMDR helps clients reduce the emotional intensity of their past experiences and promotes healing by allowing them to move beyond the pain of trauma.

This therapy is particularly effective for individuals struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is an essential component of our trauma treatment program, helping clients to feel more in control and empowered in their recovery process and daily lives.

3. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a well-researched therapeutic approach that helps clients recognize and change negative thought patterns and behaviors contributing to their addiction or mental health struggles.

Through CBT, clients learn how to reframe destructive thinking and replace it with healthier, more productive habits, ultimately transforming how they approach life challenges.

4. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is particularly effective for clients who struggle with emotional regulation or co-occurring mental health disorders, such as borderline personality disorder or anxiety.

DBT focuses on teaching critical skills for managing emotions, tolerating distress, and improving interpersonal relationships. By learning how to regulate emotions in healthier ways, clients gain the ability to handle stress and conflict without resorting to substance use.

5. Holistic Services

In addition to traditional therapies, Benchmark Transitions integrates holistic approaches to support the overall well-being of each client. Our holistic services include mindfulness practices to reduce stress, sober life coaching to build healthy routines, and trauma-informed care to address unresolved emotional pain. Integrating holistic methods ensures that clients receive well-rounded care that addresses their emotional, mental, and physical needs, promoting a full and lasting recovery.

Aftercare and Continuing Support

At Benchmark Transitions, we believe that recovery doesn’t end when treatment is complete. Our trauma treatment program includes aftercare planning and continuing support to help clients maintain their progress and continue their healing journey after they leave our facility.

  • Aftercare planning: We work with each client to develop a personalized aftercare plan that includes follow-up therapy, support groups, and resources for continued recovery.
  • Relapse prevention: For individuals with co-occurring addiction and trauma, we offer relapse prevention strategies to help them stay on track and avoid triggers that may lead to substance use.

Reviews for Benchmark Transitions Treatment Center

It's truly a blessing to see the effects the program has on the clients...

I’ve seen some amazing things occur with the clients that have come through the program at Benchmark. I’ve seen wonderful turn-around with clients that will not even speak to staff and hold their head down always, to walking with their head held high, showing confidence, smiling, interacting and being talkative with staff and coming alive right before my eyes!

The transformation is so great to see – it’s truly a blessing to see the effects the program has on the clients!!!

I was introduced to everyone who will be involved in my son's treatment...

My 25 year old son checked in this past Thursday. My first impression is extremely positive. I was introduced to everyone who will be involved in my son’s treatment. I was given a tour of the facility and his schedule of treatment was discussed. The next day I received a phone call from my son and one of his mentors. I also received an email with information pertaining to the Family Bridge, a portal where parents and family members can write to their loved one at Benchmark. I see photos of my son enjoying hiking and positive activities with his peer group. It is so important to me that I am “in the loop” and know what is happening with my son (even if he is an adult at 25).

He had gone to another rehab last year and that experience was very different. Though we had an appointment, we were kept waiting for hours. I was never introduced to the staff, the program was never discussed. I was told that I could not see the rooms. They seemed disorganized and overwhelmed.

Benchmark does feel warm, caring and like a family. The 18-28 age group is perfect for us. Aside from addiction recovery, my son is learning vocational, educational and life skills (such as money management & career counseling). I will post again after 6 months. So far, I feel optimistic and relieved.
