Opioid addiction has become an epidemic that is severely affecting communities across the United States. It can lead to devastating physical, mental and social consequences for those affected. Opioid addiction often starts with a person taking prescribed opioids from a doctor as a method of pain management. However, continued use of these drugs can lead to dependency and eventually addiction. Fortunately, there are treatments available from Benchmark Transitions to help those with opioid addiction.
Opioid addictions typically start with the misuse of prescription opioids. These drugs are commonly prescribed to treat pain, but when taken for non-medical reasons or in a way that isn’t prescribed by a doctor, they can be highly addictive and cause physical dependence. People who become addicted to opioids may also turn to street drugs such as heroin to get the same effects, leading to more serious addiction and health risks.
Treatment for opioid addiction usually requires a combination of medications and psychotherapy. Medications like buprenorphine or methadone can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can teach people how to manage their stress and address underlying issues that may have contributed to their addiction. Treatment also often includes support groups and family therapy, which can help provide patient with necessary social and emotional support. Recovery is possible, but it takes time and dedication to reach lasting sobriety.
